Ancestors
Ancestors
The "Ancestors" series is a set of soft sculptures inspired by mycology and based on the concept of epigenetic memory and symbiotic evolution. In particular, it examines how memories and experience can be passed down genetically, and the vast amount of ancestors and paired sets of genetic data that are coded into any one being. What memories and habits might we have inherited from ancient fungal or bacterial ancestors? What do we remember from our first symbiotic evolutions? How might we tap into the answer to these questions to be better care givers for non-human ecologies?
These works explore the extrapolated and interpolated geometry of a family tree devoid of siblings. They exclusively employ the crochet ladder stitch, with each stitch having two parent stitches branching from its top loop, with each subsequent line of stitches growing not only taller by one loop but also wider by an exponent of two. Each sculpture takes months to crochet, and upwards of 10 km of yarn. The cotton yarn is acquired from the collection of deceased persons.
